Interesting about diet ....

I, like most other folks, have had a hard time staying focused on diet and exercise.  I go to the beach in 2 weeks and although I am not obese, I am not trim and lean and ripped like last fall.  That said, I have stayed physically active with flying the powered paraglider and some gym time.

This week I have made 2 days to the gym and run 4 miles each day plus some swimming and some weights.  I also have eaten two good days of food.  What is a good day?  Healthy alternatives and calorie intake close to what I am using up during the day.  I go back to my default of tracking your calories in and out.  I love LoseIt for that one reason.

This week I have gone back to a more traditional good diet like the ABS Diet: Whole Grains, Veggies, Yogurt, Berries, Cottage Cheese, Whey Proteins.

So here is my observation on this diet and who I look.  I notice that I am not ripped by no means, but I don't look bloated and puffy and just "FAT" either.  When I eat bad such as burgers, fries, mexican food, chicken fried stake, chinese buffet and I just eat... I look fat and bloated.

Anyway my goal is to have more good diet and exercise days than bad.  I am not (not yet anyway) on a real hard diet exercise program with a fixed goal in mind.  That could change!

I ache all over!

Gym has  not been my friend lately.  Paragliding has.  I have been having issues launching my Powered Paraglider, so I decided last week to quit trying to fly and start practicing ground skills.  I did 2 days of it last week wednesday and thursday.  Then last night I did a short flight followed by some kiting practice.  I guess I am working the heck out of my quads and lower back cause they just ache!

It is all about staying physically active.

Diet could be better too.  I have been all over the map with diet.  Good news is my cholesterol readings yesterday were acceptable.  Over all cholesterol was high at 205, but my LDL and Triglycerides were low so the doctor's assistant said the over all result was acceptable.  I still think if I ate a GOOD diet, then they would be back down to the incredible level I had this time last year.

Today's goal.... eat better (again).

Hardest Competition Run Ever

Since I have only run 3 competitive runs, I do not have a lot to go on.  This year my goal was to beat last years run time of a 9 min mile pace in the Capitol 10K.  I made it in a 9:33 pace not as good as last year.  I attribute this to the fact that I did not start really preparing like I should have.  I did do some running but not nearly as much as I should have to make  a better time.

This was a tough one.  This run kicked my butt good.  I started out at a nice fast pace of 8:30 thinking I would get ahead of the curve.  Laps 1k-4k were all around 8:30 gettting a tad slower with each lap.  The 5k which was up enfield was brutal.  It was so bad I had to walk part of it with a massive side cramp and was hurting good.  When my breath came back I started running again with laps 6k and 7k at the 9min pace.  At the end of the 7k lap I was done.  I hit a wall of no energy and heat exhaustion (feeling).  I knew I was done and all I could do was keep my legs moving to finish.  The final 3 laps were all 10 min plus pace.

I had no energy to push the last 1k and really run it home.

On a side note the heart rate monitor was acting up that last few times I used it and the HR readings are totally unreliable.  I do not think my max HR was 231.  I have now swapped to the old HR monitor I had.

Off no carb diet for 10k tomorrow.

I ran 3k at a 8:45 pace before I hit a wall. I then walked and ran another 1k before I called it done! It is now 1:34 and lunch where I am beginning to load up carbs for tomorrow. Cracker Barrell for lunch eating the Wholesome Breakfast of 2 eggs, turkey bacon, multi-berry muffin and yogurt! Mmmmmmm

Aggravated

I just swam 8 laps non stop for the first time ever. I forgot to start the Garmin 910xt and now I have no record of it !!!!!

3 days to Capitol 10k

Today I ran 9.5 k practice. Tomorrow I rest.

The first 3k went smooth considering I have near zero carb intake since Monday. My carb average is 14g last 3 days. That is super low. I expected today to be tough, luckily I am adapting to the low carbs. Day 2 is tough, day 3 is worse, and by day 4 I gets better.

So the run .... 3k at under 9 min mile pace.... 4k to 8k progressively slower.... At 8k I started to walk and rest and run....at 9k I was done and I walked back to gym.

I notice that I am very hungry and my food intake is not satisfying me. Starved right now!

Tough run today!

I ran 6k today. I think I managed a 11 min mile pace. Today is day 3 of zero carbs and it was hard to go today. I think last two days I have verged on being cranky too.

On a different note allergies are working me over! You can smell the oak pollen it is so heavy in the air!

Time for a Change!

I am not proud to report that since Labor Day last year I have been very iffy about my diet and workouts.  I have stayed fairly active but not real consistent.  Diet has been all but forgotten.  I jumped on the scale this morning after being on vacation for 10 days of which 7 was onboard a cruise ship.  Eating all the good food and buffet and deserts on the cruise ship I now weigh 177 which is 12 lbs higher then my lowest point last summer of 165.   I am not pleased at all.   As a matter of fact, I took a swimsuit I liked from the end of last year.  I could not wear it because it was too tight.

Today begins real change again working toward that 165 target again.  I got up this morning and have only had 1 meal, breakfast.  I need to go buy some food for the fridge after work.  I am going to do a hard atkins diet for 5 days ending it saturday night before the Capitol 10k Run so I can carb load for it. Then start it again next Monday for another 10 or so days.  I want to pull some fat off and then begin eating a more normal diet like the Abs Diet I believe in the most.

I will post some Video links from my Dives in Cozumel and Roatan shortly!

Vacation Notes

Today I am driving back from New Orleans to Texas.  My family and friends and myself went on a 7 day Caribbean cruise to Cozumel, Belize, Roatan Honduras and Costa Maya.  It was great.  Of course it comes with a penalty of eating at the buffet and fine dining and little to no running in preparedness for the Capitol 10k in a week.  I had a goal of trying to beat my time last year which was a 9 min mile.  This will be hard to do considering my lack of training and diet the past month.

Of course the vacation was amazing.  I may not have done any "exercise" in the traditional sense of weight work, swimming and running.  I did however  get 2 long days of scuba diving with 4 dives and 1 day in Costa Maya of snorkeling.  I did stay fairly active considering the ugly diet.

I won't make it back to my routine till Tuesday and I plan to see how far I can run Tuesday and shoot for a 10k practice.  I will also hit a hard atkins diet Tuesday and end it Saturday the day before the race as i carb up that evening!

Silent Wings

Today was an fun filled day.  I flew with my brother this morning around Yoakum leaving from the airport.  Great flight.
I went to my parents place at 4:30 to try flying from their land.  It was great place to take off from.  Why I have not flown there before is a mystery.  Clean pasture very little debris to get in wing and very open.  Of course depends a lot on the wind direction, but I think I can take off from almost any direction there.

So why "Silent Wings"?  Well I left alone from my folks house around 5pm flew about 4 miles away into rural America only to have my 3rd every "Engine out".  This time I was low and when it went out I did not have time to try and pull start it.  My first reaction was "what do I do now?".  No time to really think about it.  I looked ahead of me and there was a nice large open field.  I thought "there is where I land".  WRONG!  I knew I could not make it after about another second of thought.  So now what?  Well, I was over an opening in the wooded area I was flying over.  I instinctevely did a swoop and dive to land.  Good news is I came in fast and hard, but I was able to land smoothly and safely with no damage to my wing or PPG engine.  Bad news is I was 1 mile from a road and had to hike my stuff out 1 mile.  My parents came to my rescue.  I carry my cell phone so I texted everyone I had an emergency landing and was ok.  I gave them GPS coordinates and they met me on the road.  My dad who is almost 70 and needs a hip replacement hiked into the woods with me and helped me pack my stuff back out.  Thank you dad!  My mom watched the truck and waited.  She was all too ready to hike with us.

I chose the title "Silent Winds" because it is an odd feeling to hear the roar of your engine go silent!
Here is my my flight track of where I went and where I landed.
